The Canon EOS 80D was announced February 18, 2016 and released to market by May 2016. So this DSLR has been around for a year and three months.

The Canon EOS 80D is fast, and if you play with the settings can produce excellent photo and video quality, this DSLR was launched in Nigeria a few months back and this is my unboxing and first look at the camera.

The 80D gets a new version of the Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS sensor with a faster on-sensor autofocus system, plus some minor additions. It has some notable improvements over the 70D, including much better Live View performance.

In my opinion this is the best camera for YouTube video shoots and production. All-round in its usage, the 80D is nothing short of the absolute definition of ‘Versatility’

It sports a very rugged build and sits right at the middle between the high end professional DSLRs and the mid range DSLRs.

IN THE BOX

In the box, the Canon 80D comes with a Kit Lens (The Canon 18 – 55MM IS STM Lens), an LP/6 battery, a battery charger and a camera strap.

The camera is targeted to entry mid level professional photographers or those who are looking to go professional but don’t have the funds to buy a professional grade DSLR.

PROS

Very good image quality; Better RAW high ISO performance than predecessor; Improved buffer depth; Very fast AF; Dual Pixel CMOS AF is excellent; f/8 AF support; 1080/60p video; Headphone jack; Very good battery life.

CONS

New kit lens isn’t very sharp; No 4K video; No clean HDMI out; 29:59 minute video recording limit; Phase detect AF not as sensitive in low-light as expected (Dual Pixel AF better in low-light).
